PPE Detection System (Hard Hat and Vest)

PPE detection turns your site cameras into an automatic equipment check: when someone enters a defined zone without a hard hat or high-visibility vest, the camera flags it and the alert reaches the shift supervisor within seconds. ALGI runs this check on your existing security cameras, with no new cameras, door readers or wearables. The goal is not to identify anyone but to make the rule violation visible: which zone, what time, which equipment was missing. Each violation record is stored with a timestamp and can be used as evidence in health and safety audits.

What is a PPE detection system?

A PPE detection system checks personal protective equipment rules automatically on site cameras. It assesses whether people in the frame are wearing a hard hat, reflective vest, safety glasses, mask or gloves, and flags any non-compliance in the zone you have defined.

Rules are tied to zones. If a hard hat is mandatory on the production floor, the same rule is not applied in the office corridor; each zone gets its own PPE set. Shift hours can also be part of the rule, so the check can run only during working hours or only on the night shift.

The system does not recognize or identify people. Its output is not a name but an event: zone, time, missing equipment and a snapshot of the event. This distinction matters both for data protection and for acceptance on the shop floor. What is being checked is the rule, not the person.

Over time, the event log shows where and when PPE rules slip, which gives the safety team something concrete to act on instead of anecdotes from walk-arounds, and makes it possible to see whether a change in signage or briefing actually had an effect.

How does PPE detection work?

The check is set up in three steps.

Define the zone and the rule. In the dashboard, you draw the inspection area over the camera view and select the equipment that is mandatory there: hard hat, vest, glasses, mask, gloves. A single camera can hold several zones with different rule sets.

Assess the video. The camera stream is processed either on an Algi Edge device installed on site or on ALGI AI servers. When a non-compliant situation is seen, an event record is created. With an on-site Algi Edge device, live video stays on your premises and only event records and event snapshots leave the site.

Deliver the alert to the right person. The violation is listed in the dashboard, and a mobile notification, email, or siren and beacon output can be triggered at the same time. Who receives the alert is set per zone: the production floor goes to the shift supervisor, the site entrance to the site manager.

Accumulated records are reported by zone and hour. The report shows at which gate violations cluster and on which shift they rise, and it feeds directly into your health and safety committee meeting.

Frequently asked questions

What is a PPE detection system and how does it work?
A PPE detection system uses camera video to assess whether people in a defined zone are wearing mandatory equipment such as a hard hat, vest, glasses or gloves. When it sees a non-compliant situation, it creates an event record with the zone, the time and the missing equipment, and sends an alert to the responsible supervisor.
Does PPE detection need extra hardware?
Not necessarily. The check runs on your existing security cameras, with no smart helmets, RFID tags or door readers. Video can be processed on ALGI AI servers, or on an Algi Edge device on site if you want processing to stay on your premises. To bring a new zone into scope, a camera that sees that zone is enough.
Are my existing IP cameras compatible?
Standard IP cameras that provide an RTSP stream are compatible. What matters is how clearly the camera sees people: hard hat checks need the head area to be distinguishable, vest checks need the torso. Very distant or straight-down angles perform poorly. Your camera list is reviewed before installation.
How long does installation take?
A single facility is set up in one day: camera streams are registered and zones and rule sets are drawn. The first days run in observation mode to tune thresholds, so alerts are logged but no on-site alarm is triggered. Once the tuning has settled, the alarm is switched on.
Is PPE detection compliant with GDPR and KVKK?
The system does not perform face recognition, does not identify individuals and keeps no per-employee records. It checks the rule, not the person: an event record consists of zone, time and missing equipment. With an on-site Algi Edge device, live video stays on your premises. Your existing workplace camera notice and employment contract obligations remain unchanged.
