VIN OCR System: Camera-Based VIN Reading

A VIN OCR system reads the 17-character vehicle identification number from a camera image and matches it to the order record. In the vehicle intake area, an operator holds a handheld device up to the chassis number, or the vehicle passes in front of a fixed camera; the VIN characters are read and checked without manual entry. Mistyped characters, a 0 confused with an O and vehicles skipped in the log drop out of the process. The read is stored together with a photo of the vehicle at intake and linked to the damage record.

What is a VIN OCR system?

A VIN OCR system is a verification layer that reads a vehicle's chassis number (VIN) from a camera image and converts it into text. The VIN is stamped on a plate under the windscreen, on the door frame or in the engine bay, and reading is done from images of these surfaces.

VIN OCR is not number plate recognition. ANPR reads the registration plate of a vehicle passing a gate; VIN OCR reads the 17-character chassis number of the vehicle itself, which is what order, shipment and damage records at intake are built on.

There are two ways to use it. Reading with a handheld device suits intake and delivery points where the operator walks up to the vehicle. Reading with a fixed camera is used where vehicles pass a set point, such as a port exit or a factory shipping gate.

A VIN that has been read is not just a piece of text; it is matched against an order, shipment or damage record. If no match is found, the operator is alerted immediately and the situation is corrected before the wrong vehicle is accepted. Every read keeps its photo and timestamp, so any intake can be checked later.

How does VIN OCR work at vehicle intake?

The process runs in three steps.

The reading point is chosen. For handheld reading, the operator devices are registered. In a fixed setup, the camera is placed where it sees the VIN plate, together with its lighting. On rusty, scratched or reflective VIN plates, the lighting angle decides whether the read succeeds.

The reference is connected. The order list, shipping manifest or stock record is provided by your ERP. Each VIN read is compared with this list, and the situations that trigger an alert are defined in the dashboard.

The record is created. Video is processed either on an Algi Edge device installed on site or on ALGI AI servers. The read result, a photo of the vehicle at that moment and a timestamp are stored together. If required, photos around the vehicle are taken in the same step and a damage record is created, so the condition at handover is not open to dispute later.

Accepted vehicles are added to the yard inventory. When used with YardVision, the vehicle's parking position in the yard is linked to the same record, so the intake read, the damage photos and the location of the vehicle sit in one place.

Frequently asked questions

What is a VIN OCR system and how does it work?
A VIN OCR system reads the vehicle chassis number from a camera image, converts it into text and matches it with the order or shipment record. Reading is done with a handheld device or a fixed camera. The result is stored with a photo of the vehicle and a timestamp, and the operator is alerted at once if no match is found.
Does a VIN OCR system need extra hardware?
It depends on how you use it. Handheld reading needs one mobile device per operator. A fixed setup needs a camera and lighting that see the VIN plate clearly; your existing yard camera can be used if it has this view. Video can be processed on ALGI AI servers, or on an Algi Edge device on site if you want processing to stay on your premises.
Are my existing IP cameras compatible?
In a fixed setup, IP cameras that provide an RTSP stream can be used, but for VIN reading what matters is how large and sharp the VIN plate appears in the frame; wide-angle yard cameras are usually not enough. If you share a photo of your intake point, we assess whether your existing camera is sufficient before installation.
How long does setup take, and when does it go live?
A handheld setup is completed on the same day: devices are registered, order data is connected and operators get a short training session. A fixed camera setup adds camera and lighting installation, which usually takes a few days. During the first days, reading accuracy is verified in the real intake flow.
What is the difference between VIN OCR and ANPR?
They read different things. ANPR reads the registration plate of a vehicle passing a gate and is used for access, barrier control and time on site. VIN OCR reads the 17-character chassis number stamped on the vehicle and is used at intake and delivery to match the vehicle with its order, shipment and damage records.
Is a VIN OCR system GDPR and KVKK compliant?
The system looks at the vehicle. A VIN is a vehicle record; operators and drivers are not recognized or identified, and stored images are frames of the VIN plate and the vehicle. With an on-site Algi Edge device, live video stays on your premises; with server processing, video is processed on ALGI AI servers. If people enter the frame, your existing duty to inform them about camera use still applies.
