Label Inspection and OCR Verification System

Automated label inspection puts a camera on the packing line that reads the label on each product and compares the serial number, batch code, expiry date and barcode with the expected values. Labels that are missing, unreadable, applied upside down or printed for the wrong product are rejected from the line. The comparison uses order data from your ERP, so it is not enough for a label to be printed correctly; it also has to be on the right product. Every check result is stored with its image and written into the batch report.

What is a label inspection system?

A label inspection system is a verification layer that reads the printed information on packed products from a camera and compares it with the expected value. Text is decoded with OCR, barcodes and QR codes with a code reader, and the result is matched against the reference coming from your ERP or MES.

The check answers four questions at once: is there a label, is it readable, is it in the right position, and is its content correct. Missing just one of them is a reason for a recall in food and pharmaceuticals, and in automotive supply it means a rejected shipment.

The system is not tied to a single fixed template. When the label design or the product range changes, a new template is defined in the dashboard; the line does not have to be stopped and reprogrammed.

Because every read is kept with its image and timestamp, the inspection doubles as documentation. When a customer audit asks what was on a given batch, the answer is a report, not a search through paper records. The same log also shows which label fields fail most often, which helps the packing team fix the cause at the printer.

How does label inspection with OCR work?

Verification is set up in three steps.

Set up the reading point. The camera is positioned where it sees the label clearly, together with fixed lighting. On glossy film or misted packaging, angled lighting is used to break up reflections.

Define the template and the reference. In the dashboard, the fields on the label are marked: serial number, batch code, expiry date, barcode. For each field you define the format it must follow and where the reference value comes from, whether that is an ERP order, an MES record or a fixed list.

Connect the decision to the line. Video is processed either on an Algi Edge device installed on site or on ALGI AI servers. The value read is compared with the reference. On a mismatch, an event opens in the dashboard and a reject signal goes to the line controller; a pusher removes the faulty product from the line. If preferred, decisions are only reported.

Every read is stored with the label image and a timestamp. The batch report is exported as a PDF and presented as evidence in customer audits.

Frequently asked questions

What is a label inspection system and how does it work?
A label inspection system reads the label on each product passing along the line from a camera. It decodes text with OCR and barcodes and QR codes with a code reader, then compares the result with the reference value from your ERP or MES. On a mismatch, an event record opens and a reject signal goes to the line controller.
Does label inspection need extra hardware?
The reading point needs a fixed camera and controlled lighting, because in label reading lighting directly determines the result. An existing line camera can be used if it sees the label clearly. Video is processed either on ALGI AI servers or on an Algi Edge device on site, and the system connects to the line controller over dry contact.
Are my existing IP cameras compatible?
IP cameras that provide an RTSP stream can be used; what matters is how large and sharp the label appears in the frame. Small-print serial numbers require the label to fill the frame. Share a sample label, the smallest text size and the line speed, and we will assess whether your current camera is adequate before installation.
How long does installation take?
Once the camera and lighting are in place, the template is defined and the ERP connection is made; setup on a single line usually takes a few days. The system first runs in reporting mode, and the reject connection is enabled after read accuracy has been verified in real production.
Is label inspection compliant with GDPR and KVKK?
The check looks at the product, not at people. The system does not recognize or identify operators and keeps no per-employee records; the stored image is the reading frame of the label. With an on-site Algi Edge device, video stays on your premises. If operators enter the frame, your existing camera notice obligations still apply.
